    A couple of things about antiques, they all have a story behind them and a value associated with them whether sentimental or monetary.

    “It’s an early Gibson guitar worth anywhere from $1,800 to $2,500,” said Tony Enright of the Treasure Hunters Roadshow. A guitar purchased for about a hundred dollars years ago, can fetch a pretty good price at the “Roadshow” in Saint Paul this week.

    “Oh I purchased it about 25 years ago,” recalled Pete Falkowski. He said he got a good deal back in the late ’70’s for his Fender bass guitar. He paid $150 for it through a newspaper ad, he’s been playing it ever since and today he parted ways with it. “It’s gone now,” Falkowski said. It was a decision that took some thinking, but in the end he figured he got his money worth and sold the Fender for $1,700.

    “We have collectors on the other end who have millions of dollars, they have nothing else better to do with their money, but spend it on stuff like these collectibles,” said Enright. The Treasure Hunters Roadshow works as the middle man. Workers sift through thousands of items each day knowing what collectors on the other end want. Enright said the hottest items these days are anything war related, War World I and World War II two items are especially popular among collectors and the payout is immediate.

    “We’re pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars each week into these cities and it’s really boosting the economy,” said Enright. This week the economical boost hits the Twin Cities, as long as you can part with the sentimental value. “It’s a good bass though,” said Falkowski.

    The Treasure Hunters Roadshow runs Tuesday-Friday 9am-6pm and Saturday 9am-4pm at the La Quinta Inn in Saint Paul. Admission is free and along with your collectibles you’ll want to pack a little patience, long lines are anticipated and the wait could be hours.

  • The Art to make Leather from Raw

    Many consumers own a variety of leather products, ranging from belts to jackets, and the resourceful material has been used for thousands of years in a variety of products. The process for making leather includes a complex set of steps from skin to finished product. These steps are often referred to as “tanning” due to the most typical part of the process, which uses the tannic acids present in plant matter to chemically modify the leather so that it will not decompose or rot.

    If used without any treatment, animal hides would quickly break down and begin to stink. For this reason, the hide needs to be treated to form leather. The process can be broken down into two

    basic stages: wet blue processing and finishing, both of which are adept in large commercial spaces known as tanneries. While it is possible to make leather at home, it is an aromatic and complicated process, and most people prefer to send out their hides for tanning.

    Skin has three layers beginning with the epidermis, proceeding to the derma, and ending in the adipose, which is also known as flesh. When making leather, only the strong and flexible derma, which is a layer of collagen fibers, is preferred. The collagen is exuded by cells, and forms a network of useful strings. When leather is processed, these fibers are retained while everything else is stripped away.

    First, the skin is fleshed, the flesh being cleaned off of the hide, and the surplus adipose, or animal fat, is removed. Then the hides are washed and soaked, which regain moisture to dried hides while loosening blood and dirt. Chemicals are added to turn the water alkaline, which will eat away at the hair and epidermis. The collagen fibers begin to swell, while excess proteins rushed out.

    When this process is complete, the water is brought to a stable pH and the swelling goes down, so that enzymatic cleaners can be added to remove any remaining organic waste. Then the hide is pickled in a highly acidic solution, which prepares it for tanning. Tanning agents form bonds with the collagen in the hide, causing it to resist bacterial attack, and the hides are removed from the wet blue processing tank for finishing, after being run through rollers to remove excess water.

    When the hides emerge from the wet blue stage, they are split to the preferred thickness. Depending on the planned use of the leather, this thickness may vary. Then the leather is re-tanned, with different materials depending on whether it needs to be firm or soft, and dyed. After dyeing, the leather is oiled so that it will remain flexible and soft. Then the leather is dried, mechanically treated to soften it, and buffed so that it will have a smooth and attractive surface. Some leathers are marked with patterns before the final stage, which is the function of a finishing coat of polymer or wax to protect the surface of the leather.

    Leather treatment used to be a highly polluting industry, but tanneries responded to public protest about odor and pollution issues. Tanneries now recycle the liquids used in the leather making process and desist from chemical dumping. Tanning still carries a strong stink, but is no longer accompanied by environmentally unfriendly business practices in most parts of the world.

    The penny coin was the second smallest denomination of the Irish pound which was decimalised on Decimal Day, February 15, 1971 it was the second of three new designs introduced all in bronze.
    The coin was designed by the Irish artist Gabriel Hayes and the design is adapted from the Book of Kells held in Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. The coin originally had a diameter of 2.032 centimeters and mass of 3.564 grams consisting of copper, tin and zinc.
    The coins official designation was “new penny” and this was changed in 1985 to “penny”. In 1990 the decision was taken to produce the coin on a copper plated steel base as the bronze had become relatively expensive. This accounts for the reason that some coins are affected by magnets - these are the steel base plate coins.
    The coin was 1/100 of an Irish Pound and was withdrawn with the arrival of the euro.

    The DB Class 215 is a 4 axle diesel locomotive of the V 160 type. They were built for the German Federal Railways (Deutsche Bundesbahn) for passenger and freight service on secondary and primary routes, and later passed to the Deutsche Bahn AG.
    A number of variants were made by rebuilding; some where converted to Class 225 locomotives for freight only work for DB Cargo and the sub-class Class 215.9 were altered for use on the SyltShuttle.
    Background
    The locomotives of Class 215 were a longer version of the original DB Class V 160, and consequently were equipped with steam heating apparatus. In the pre 1968 classification scheme they were to be numbered V 163.[citation needed]
    The engines were built to the length of the DB Class 218 (400mm longer than a Class V 160), so that later they could be rebuilt to the same specification of the longer class, which at the time only existed as a prototype; the Deutsche Bundesbahn could not wait for the Class 218 to reach production maturity as it was forging ahead with the replacement of the last steam locomotives.
    Design and modifications
    The locomotive has a diesel powertrain, using hydraulic transmission, with both bogies driven by cardan shafts, and all wheels powered.
    The ten initial prototype machines built from 1968 und 1969 by Krupp were powered by diesel engines of type 12 V 956 TB 10 with a power of 1839kw.
    The machines numbered 215 011 to 215 070 and 215 094 to 215 150 were powered by less powerful (1397kW) but more reliable 16 cylinder Maybach MTU 16 V 652 TB engines (the same as the engines with which the Class 216 / V 160s were equipped), while the numbers 215 071 to 215 093 had a more powerful engine, but this time again the 12 cylinder 12 V 956 TB used in the prototypes.215 091 to 215 093 were later retrofitted with the V-12 engine, having initially had the 16 cylinder engine.
    The steam heating also doubled as a pre-heater for the locomotives engine, and other parts. Space was reserved for the installation of an electrical generator later on, the proposed conversion of the machines to the 218 series never came about - the exception was 215 112 which was rebuilt as DB Class 218 399 after an accident.
    Numbers 030 to 032 locos were exceptional in that they were fitted from the outset with an electric heater (steam heating was removed) driven from an auxiliary diesel of type 8V 331 TC 10 with an output of 520kW at 2100rpm. Unlike in the DB Class 217 the auxiliary diesel is not connected to the transmission and cannot be used for additional traction power

    In the summer of 2003, DB AutoZug acquired a total of 18 locomotives from DB Regio, 14 units were rebuilt in a fashion analogous to the DBAG Class 225 but numbered as Class 215.9. The remaining four locomotives were kept for spare parts.

    The film approaches the back of a long hollow conical tube, and when the center of the plastic is near the tube, the outer edges of the film form flaps that wrap around the conical tube. The film is pulled downward around the outside of the tube and a vertical heat-sealing bar clamps onto the edges of the film, bonding the film by melting the seam edges together.
    To start the bagging process, a horizontal sealing bar clamps across the bottom edge of the tube, bonding the film together, and cutting off any film below. The sealed tube end is then lowered onto a precision weighing table and the product to be bagged is dispensed through the long conical tube in the center of the bag.
    When the tare weight of the product-filled bag is reached, filling stops, and the horizontal sealing bar seals the top of the bag, and simulatenously forms the bottom of the next bag above. This bag is then cut off from the tube and is now a sealed package, ready to advance onward into the product boxing and shipping processes.
    During the final sealing process, the bag may be filled with air from a blower or from an inert gas supply. Inflating the bag helps reduce the crushing of fragile products such as potato chips, while inflating with an inert gas helps drive out oxygen and retards the growth of bacteria that would spoil the product.
    Dual web systems are also available for four side sealed pouches, as well as pouches requiring different materials for each side. Dual web systems use two rolls of material instead of one, which are fed in from opposite sides of the machine. The bottom and sides are heat sealed together to form the pouch, and the product is loaded from the top. The pouch with loaded product then advances downwards and the top is sealed and pouch is cut off. The sealing of the top of the pouch forms the bottom of the next pouch. During this process a tear notch may be added.
    The feeding of material and cutting of the pouch can be determined either by pouch length, or indexing to an eyespot, which is detected by a visual sensor.
    While single web systems are popular for food applications, the dual web four side seal system is often popular for IVD and Medical device products.
    Closely related is the horizontal form-fill-seal machine, which is generally less space effective than a Vertical system.

    Mount Ashland is the highest peak in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon, U.S. It was named for the city of Ashland, Oregon 18miles (29km) north of the mountain. The Siskiyou Mountains are in the northern Klamath Mountains in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. The mountain is part of the Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest, which encompasses most of the Siskiyou Mountains. The Oregon-California border is three miles (5 km) south of the mountain.

    Mount Ashland’s “Bowl”
    Mount Ashland features a ski area with 23 trails on 200acres (0.81km2) served by four lifts, in addition to chute skiing in a glacial cirque called The Bowl. The mountain receives over 300inches (7,620.0mm) of snow annually with a season from early December until mid-April. Half of the terrain is rated as advanced, and 15% is rated beginner.
    History

    Mount Ashland’s Lodge
    During the 1950s, the mountain was a popular destination for local back country ski enthusiasts, some of whom built the lodge and one lift in 1963. In the 1970s, the area was managed by the Southern Oregon College Foundation (now Southern Oregon University) until it was purchased by Dick Hicks, a local businessman, in 1977. In 1983, the ski area was sold to Harbor Properties of Seattle, the owners of Stevens Pass Ski Area. Two new lifts were built during their ownership and night skiing lights were installed. In 1991, the City of Ashland purchased the ski resort through a community fundraising campaign and a grant from the Oregon Economic Development Fund. The slogan of the community fundraising campaign was “Save Mount Ashland.”
    In 1929 the City of Ashland got the Forest Service to agree that the city would participate in any forest management that might impact water quality of the 15,000-acre (61km2) Ashland Creek watershed, the city’s sole municipal water supply.
    Throughout the 1940s and 1950s backcountry skiing on Mount Ashland grew in popularity among local residents, prompting some to envision a developed ski area.

    During 1961 to 1963, the Mount Ashland Corporation raised money to clear trees, grade terrain, build roads, and develop a ski area. It includes a ski lodge, the Ariel chairlift, a T-bar lift, and a rope tow on the north face of the mountain. Medford businessman Glenn Jackson provided more than half of the $120,000 that financed construction of the lodge.
    In 1970, after three consecutive years of winter drought deprived the mountain of adequate snowfall to continue operations, the Mount Ashland Corporation folded. The Southern Oregon College Foundation took over management the ski area after the people of Jackson County financed the purchase of ski area resources in the first of two public bailouts in the operation’s history.
    In 1975, the City of Ashland signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with USFS in which the city agreed to hire consultants to monitor conditions in the Ashland Creek watershed and USFS agreed to implement any measures necessary to maintain watershed quality.
    In 1977, Dick Hicks purchased the ski area from Jackson County and incorporated it as Ski Ashland, Inc.
    In 1978, Ski Ashland installed the Windsor chairlift. The monitoring effort led by USFS Ashland district ranger, Glendon Jefferies, observed the East Fork of Ashland Creek flowing “a solid reddish brown” below the ski area. Jefferies wrote to Ski Ashland in 1978, “The Mount Ashland Ski Area is a major source of sediment pollution in the East Fork of Ashland Creek.” A 1979 report by James Montgomery to the city administrator made a similar finding.
    In 1983, Harbor Properties of Seattle purchased Ski Ashland from Hicks. Over the next four years, Harbor developed on-slope lighting, a vehicle shop, and the Sonnet and Comer chair lifts.
    Drought struck again in 19881991 and skier use declined. In 1991 a grassroots effort raised two million dollars to save Mount Ashland from bankruptcy. Money for the purchase came from donor restricted contributions and a grant from the Oregon Economic Development Fund channeled through the City of Ashland.
